This term, we have launched a fishing enrichment designed to help students build perseverance, learn new skills and develop mindfulness through the calming art of fishing. It has been a wonderful opportunity for pupils to step outside the classroom and engage with an activity that encourages patience, focus and resilience.

Throughout the enrichment, students have learned a range of practical skills, including casting, lining a rod, tying fishing knots and striking a rod. Each new skill has been taught carefully, with plenty of encouragement and support, and students have approached every session with growing confidence. Fishing has offered them a chance to slow down, concentrate on the moment and enjoy the outdoors in a meaningful way.

One of the most impressive aspects of the enrichment has been the perseverance shown by the students. This is a skill that many of them find challenging, particularly in relation to their EHCP targets, but they continued to turn up, try again and remain committed even when the fish were not biting. For several sessions, they fished with no luck at all, yet they never gave up.

Their hard work and determination were rewarded in the final week of term, when an incredible 12 fish were caught. The excitement and pride shared by the group made the achievement even more special. It was a fantastic moment that celebrated not just the catches themselves, but the effort, patience and resilience that made them possible.

We are extremely proud of every student involved and look forward to seeing how this enrichment continues to support their confidence, wellbeing and personal development.
