Here at St Luke’s Academy we have added a childcare qualification to our curriculum so that students can work towards the CACHE level 1 qualification in ‘Caring for young children’.
The course gives students an understanding about what is required to work within a childcare setting whether that be a school, nursery or as a childminder. It looks at various units covering healthy eating, team work, safeguarding and being able to observe children in different settings.
Our class did some work around eating foods and had a blind taste test to see if we could recognise ingredients in certain baby foods. In true St Luke’s style the teachers got involved too and we all made some very funny faces at some of the jars we tried. Some baby food had lots of flavours and others were tasteless. The students also engaged well in changing nappies, learning how to swaddle a baby and also how to dress the baby. At all times the children maintained the importance of supporting the babies head.
Our baby was named Max and he was 6 months old. We also looked at certain toys that would be good for Max’s development.
